But Who Are We, Really?
Ask a British person today, “Who are we, as a nation?” and you're likely to be met with hesitation - a mix of uncertainty, frustration, or shame. The weight of our colonial past, cultural divides, and political fractures often overshadows our shared identity.
But history, however complex, is part of our collective story. This project is not about rewriting the past - it’s about identifying what has consistently brought people together within it. Across music, fashion, film, design, performance and more, the arts have long provided a shared language: a way to reflect our struggles, express who we are, and imagine who we might become.
The Project
The arts do not belong to institutions alone. They belong to the people who shape them, challenge them, and carry them forward.
From grassroots spaces to global stages, British creativity has always been collaborative, disruptive, and deeply human. It is one of the UK’s most powerful cultural exports, transcending borders, influencing global movements and creating connection far beyond our shores.
Through a docuseries, podcast, and written archive, Who We Are builds a living cultural record, examining how and why creativity remains vital to social connection, wellbeing, and community resilience.
This is a celebration of Britain as a nation of creatives. A challenge to the narrative of division. And an invitation to reconnect with our cultural legacy, with one another, and with the role the arts continue to play in shaping Who We Are.
